Solidarity With Spanish Political Prisoners

Mate Zalka

This is a report from a delegate who attended the World Congress, Mate Zalka from Spain.

As you comrades know, we of the Partido Comunista de Espaņa (r) are working on the upcoming trial of our comrades who are in jail in Paris, France. For us this is of extraordinary importance, not only because our Secretary General and other comrades are detained, but because it is a trial against the Communist principles that inspire all of us, and besides this, they are held in a foreign country, which is a still greater obstacle to us. But French imperialism is trying to criminalize our Spanish Communist Party with some non-existent accusations in Spain, with which they are trying to punish our revolutionary activity and call it "terrorism"!

For this upcoming trial we need urgently all kinds of support, because we are convinced that if these authorities are able to criminalize us, then after us will come other communist and anti-fascist organizations all over Europe.

What we are trying to show to the French judge is that our party maintains diverse international, contacts with all types of different organizations, and we will present to the court letters signed by all these organizations that confirm this. At the same time we want to bring witnesses to the trial that will speak about their contacts with us.

We plan to have a large demonstration in front of the court in Paris. The trial is set to be between the month of September of this year and February of 2003.

We hope that you will cooperate with us in this important trial which basically is important for all of the progressive movements.

We have some good news, comrades! Comrade Brotons will be let out of jail as a political prisoner on August 26th of this year, after serving 25 years for his Communist activities in Spain. We hope that he will be able to take a holiday and maybe visit Canada, since he speaks English.

Our party of course has informed everyone about the World Congress that I attended in 2001, since this is one of the priorities of our international work. All comrades here are very interested about the progress of the International Council. We have published in our publication "Resistance" a report about it, although this could have been done much better. The report published recently in our other publication "Antorcha," is much better and is closer to our point of view.

However, the articles by comrade Harpal Brar in the latest issue dealing with the Congress are much more correct and show the really revolutionary, communist and consistent point of view. We agree with Harpal Brar's analyses fully. This is the way true communists should act.

As for the possibility of a Spanish edition of Northstar Compass to be published by us, this question is proceeding slowly, because we need full dedication and time for such a very important world publication as NSC. We have support for this idea, but we need practical steps to be taken so that we will realize this ambition of ours. I feel that the time is ripening that a Spanish edition will see the light of day soon. We need a bit more time to coordinate the efforts needed for this important undertaking.

I'm sending our best wishes to all of the comrades. We would certainly be happy if Michael Lucas would be able to come and protest together with us in France, and then visit Spain, so that he could get to know the country that is also his because the blood of his family waters our battlefields, which we Spanish Communists will never ever forget.

A strong embrace for all the comrades!
