Democracy in Progress

By VANYA KALASHNIKOV

As it was under socialism

This is how it is now under capitalism, taken down and under weeds.

Once the flagship of the local Slovak economy in Czechoslovakia, this cement factory lies in ruins. The 4,000 former employees now sit at home and are thinking as to how they were duped by that "velvet revolution".

Now that this "velvet revolution" has turned ugly, the idea of the class struggle takes on a new meaning, but a bit too late. The bourgeoisie won a temporary victory this time round.

This former state-owned cement factory was bought now for a pittance by the Austro-German conglomerate, dismantled and taken away and assembled abroad while the Slovak workers are left holding the bag, and, if they do need cement, they have to pay ten times higher prices than it was before. The same thing is happening to the Slovak agriculture.

In the photographs you can see just one example of the former collective farm, which was destroyed by the wild privatization (piratization) of agriculture. These photos resemble practically the same devastation all across Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. People cannot believe as to how their quisling government is destroying the hard work of the workers and farmers and now, we are dependent for imports from the Western imperialist countries!

For us it is unbelievable how this so-called clerical Slovak Christian-Democratic government dragged us into the war against the Muslim world in an effort to please Uncle Sam and NATO!

If people think that no upheaval will take place here and elsewhere, they are wrong. The pot is now boiling and sooner than later, the lid will blow off!

The Collective Farms are no more and the buildings are in ruins – only skeletons remain of the structures.
