For a Revolutionary Year 2006

Dear Northstar Compass readers:

As the main bulwark of world capitalism, US imperialism provides ever more compelling evidence that this system is old and dying and must be replaced by a new stage in human history, world socialism. The Bush regime, with its US Republican and Democratic Party political representation of US monopoly capitalism and imperialism, increasingly exposes itself to the peoples of the world as a regime of war criminals that must be defeated. The US government has faithfully pursued maximum profits for the US ruling class through its global war on terror currently centered in Iraq. Thus far, the Iraqi resistance in particular is showing the way forward – to national liberation and socialism.

Elsewhere, too, from Nepal and the Philippines to Colombia and Venezuela, resistance to US led imperialism is becoming stronger and much more widespread. But the world’s majority, the working class and oppressed peoples, do not yet have consistent and disciplined organization based on proletarian internationalism, to take substantial advantage of the political-military crisis faced by US imperialism.

The International Council for Friendship and Solidarity with the Soviet People led by Michael Lucas, is a modest anti-imperialist, pro socialist united front organization. In the year ahead, it needs to play a significant role in encouraging the unity of the pro-socialist forces in former USSR and the spirit of pro-socialist internationalism amongst the various branches of the friendship movement all over the world.

Following a successful Second World Congress that was marked by such unity, the International Council and the Northstar Compass magazine are poised to share far and wide the "good news" that socialism is the only way out of the current imperialist-led capitalist system of modern day human slavery. This invaluable message – that there is a marvelous and realistic alternative to global capitalism – will immeasurably strengthen the global o justice and freedom in the year ahead.
