New Movement in "New Europe"

According to the American Foreign Policy Council Report #200 in Washington, DC – a number of former Socialist states in Europe are gearing up their cooperation for missile defence cooperation with the United States. A spokesman for the Czech Foreign Ministry had confirmed to the "Prague Post" (April 5) that, after already two years of quiet talks with Washington, negotiations with the US: "now are proceeding on the subject of an American anti-missile base in the Czech Republic."

A top Polish official has disclosed that consultations between Warsaw and Washington on the future role of Poland in the USA missile defence talks are beginning very soon, according to the Polish Deputy Foreign Minister W. Waszczykowski.

Romania is also telling Washington that it wants to be part of this US global missile shield as proposed by the Pentagon. Romania is ready to grant US as a base for location of the American interceptors. Romania’s Defence Minister Teodor Atanasu stated the following: "We are one of NATO’s border countries and we will be one of EU’s borders as well. It is of very great importance to have all the surveillance elements that could assure the Euro-Atlantic and European protection."
