Spectre of Mexican Immigrants Is Now Haunting Washington

Based on article in "Turning The Tide" by Mubia Abu-Jamal

Now that the US polls show complete disenchantment with both the Republicans and the Democrats, the issue of immigration is once again is raised and fanned, as politicians again stir the pot of social resentment. Voices are raised, tempers are frayed, different proposals are launched, while the destiny of many millions, are now held in limbo. But in numbers not seen here in the US for generations, Mexican born (or related) families pound the US cities pavements in protests, demanding amnesty for the millions who live and work in the most thankless jobs, her in the USA.

The ruling class in the United States of America dread the approaching dawn when those who number the nation’s majority are brown not white. The forces that urged the US to invade Iraq among other countries, now again are fanning the war of hatred for their political gain. The perpetual fear in this "democratic USA" of the foreign OTHER, the fear of the Spanish-speaking people, who are called "criminals", and who dared to cross the Rio Grande River, to inhabit the lands that US imperialism had stolen from their ancestors!

It is very unlikely that the US government will force the return of 11,000,000 men, women and children back to Mexico! The ruling class know that if this happened the agriculture, where most of these workers are working and are paid slave labour wages, will virtually go out of business. Guess who is doing most of the work to rebuild New Orleans? In case you guessed wrong that it is Washington’s FEMA - no it is the Native Americans, the Latinos and Afro-Americans!

History has shown that the US ruling class and imperialism had always made certain that in its history that the American courts and legislature will always (with some exceptions of sell-out artists who bucked under) consistently denied entry to the US and if they did, they classified all of them as white when they applied for citizenship. Through its history the US ruling class made this distinction.

This ugly American history, maybe again reborn, in the latest "battle" over Mexican immigration. Political storms have a way of giving way to political hurricanes, that even those who planned them cannot always control them.

Bush Administration is in a crisis. Perhaps the recent millions of people who demonstrated last is a great cause for concern.

This political force will eventually transform into a powerful social force, but let not the Republicans or the Democrats expect this powerful social force to join them.

Millions of Latinos marched all over the US against the present policies of President Bush's White House!
