This Is the Actual "Wonderful Life" for East Europe Migrant Workers!
From SOCIALIST VOICE – Ireland
This is a condensed version of an excellent expose of how the workers from the former socialist countries are suffering now in this "wonderful life" in the West.
The gross abuse of the migrant workers here in Ireland continues to be uncovered. The latest case is the unbelievable exploitation of thirteen female mushroom-pickers from Lithuania by Eamonn Murray of company Cavan, a typical exploiter mushroom grower.
These workers got in touch with SIPTU for help in exposing their appalling working conditions and low pay. Having worked the previous night until 2am and then having to get back to work at 5 am, they were all fired by this capitalist Irish hero of private exploitation, leaving all of these migrant workers not only unemployed, but homeless.
These Lithuanian workers as well as other migrant workers from Poland and other Eastern European countries, not finding work in their country, left their families in order to try and support them back home.
These workers have to work seventy to eighty hours per week, seven days a week and earn less than 2.30 Euros per day, while the legal minimum wage in EU is 7.65 euros per hour. These workers also have to pay for their living accommodations on the farm.
The SIPTU leaders are helping these exploited workers to receive their proper pay for these Eastern European workers.
These workers had the protection before in their socialist countries by the state and their trade unions. They did not have to leave their families to find work outside.
We hope that these workers write back home and tell others who might still believe that living in the West is "heaven on earth." Having found out the reality, this is the best teacher!
