Thousands of Hungarians Protest Reforms

BUDAPEST - September 8, 2007

Over 10,000 Hungarians marched through Central Budapest, protesting against government-initiated reforms. This protest was organized by the organization “National Association of Families with Several Children.” They marched to the Parliament Buildings demanding that the government ”withdraw measures that would compromise the future of families and children.”

“This present Hungarian government deprives children of their future opportunities, it generates chaos and fear to meet its own selfish goals, therefore it must resign!” charged Ildiko Pelez Gall, deputy chairman of the main Hungarian opposition “Fidesz Party”.

Meanwhile the General Secretary of this movement, Adam Torok criticized the government that they talk about equal opportunities while building new offices for themselves, closing down schools and hospitals, dismissing teachers, raising the tuition fees for the students and forcing the Hungarian Doctors to find better paying jobs in other countries.

Over 30 civil groups, including a wide-range of different associations representing the teachers, doctors, social services and local government workers also joined this large demonstration.
