Friendship News

The Canadian Friends of Soviet People and Northstar Compass journal together celebrated the 90th Anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution in Toronto on Sunday, November 11th at the Friendship House.

The members and readers gathered to see a documentary video about the events leading to the October Revolution, which included historical footage that most of the people gathered did not see before. Before the program began there were revolutionary Soviet music and songs being played in the Carpathian Ballroom.

Michael Lucas, Editor of NSC welcomed the guests and read greetings sent to us on this occasion. He then introduced Frank Trampus, Chairman of the Toronto Branch of the CFSP who spoke briefly and this was followed by the main speaker, RG, who gave a historical overview of the October Revolution, its meaning to the whole world, its successes, its heroism in saving the world from German fascism and as a bulwark for peace. He also analyzed the reasons for the temporary demise of the USSR due to internal revisionism in the service of US imperialism.

Abdiev Maksout, PhD who came from Kazakhstan spoke as what the Soviet Union meant to the people of Kazakhstan and what they had under Socialism, which they now lost under capitalism.

The hall was decorated with many historical photographs of 1917-1918 and also with revolutionary slogans.

After a very enjoyable buffet meal and many proposed toast to the Great October Revolution, we had entertainment, amongst which was a very young and talented violinist Nitharsiga Thavapalan.

Helen Lucas the Financial Secretary thanked all the members and friends for the very generous donation of over $400 for the CFSP and NSC to keep on doing their very important work.

Concluding toasts were given by Lloyd Redstone, a Canadian war since this November 11th was the Memorial Day in Canada. Another toast was given by Kota Parousis, Vice Chairman of Toronto CFSP.
