Huge Protest March Held In Ljubljana in Former Yugoslavia
Over 70,000 protestors took to the streets in the capital of Slovenia
last November 17th. Protesting were pensioners, trade unionists and
students, left-wing activists, communists and the anti-war movements,
who marched together demanding higher salaries for the workers.
Even though the average wage is supposed to be about 1200 Euros per
month, over 75% of the workers do not even come near this. They get a
very miserable 350-400 Euros per month.
Slovenia has now the distinction of having the highest inflation rate
in the European Union. This was caused by it joining the European
Union. There are over 20% of Slovenian population of 2 million people
who live in abject poverty. The food prices and electricity skyrocketed
over 30% in 2007.
Protestors also protested against the right-wing neo-fascist Prime
Minister of Slovenia, Janez Jansa, who was one of the chief organizers
of smuggling weapons to Croatia and Bosnia in 1991-1994. His cohorts,
the war profiteers had broken the international law and the UN embargo
of weapons trade in former Yugoslavia.
Death to fascism – freedom to the people! Fight fir solidarity and
socialism!
