International Women’s Day Greetings from the Working Women’s
Organization in Pakistan
Dear friends:
International Women’s Day on March 8th is the day when women around the globe not only
celebrate their successes, but they are renewing their determination to defeat the faced
challenges by supporting each other.
Like many other countries, Pakistani women are also victims of laws and police orders, non-stop
bomb blasts, unavailability of basic necessities, high inflation, high unemployment, elimination of
basic human rights, restrictions on the judiciary and media, energy crisis, power shortages and the
anti-workers policies by the present regime. The country’s first woman Prime Minister was brutally
murdered. Women, men, trade unionists, human rights activists and lawyers are arrested and
tortured by the authorities. Even if the present situation in Pakistan is extremely gloomy, but one
thing that keeps our hopes alive is that the workers, women, trade unions, lawyers and media
never stop to raise their voices together against this suppression by the Pakistani government.
The WWO organized a Seminar on March 8th and it was held at the Lahore Press Club. Lawyers,
women, trade union representatives, human rights activists will present their thoughts regarding
the role of women in building democracy and justice.
Salute to all women on this International Women’s Day!
