Statement by the World Peace Council about the Serbian Province of Kosovo

The World Peace Council has denounced the new escalation in the developments of the “Imperialist Chessboard” of the Balkans, with the separatist and unilateral declaration of the “independence” of Kosovo.

Since the very bombing by NATO in 1999, when during the barbarous bombing for 79 days against people of Yugoslavia where thousands of people lost their lives – the goal of the imperialist forces and their war machine was clear. It was to divide and split the country into different parts ad thus control the whole area – while neglecting and violating all international laws or peoples’ rights.

The United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, upon which the UN amongst others mandated NATO to guarantee and monitor peace in Kosovo through its KFOR. But even under this ruling and “Resolution 1244” by which NATO became the ruler in a “de facto” protectorate – it underlined that Kosovo remains a province of Serbia which is the legal successor of Yugoslavia today.

Today NATO is going to hand over its rule to the European Union; we are witnessing a new act of flagrant violation of the sovereignty of an independent state, of the international law and the relevant UN Resolutions!

Kosovo now, whether as “NATO land” or the “EU land” is another proof of the cynical and inhuman policies of the US, the EU and NATO in the Balkans.

The WPC is expressing its solidarity with the peoples of former Yugoslavia and calling upon all peace loving forces of the world to coordinate our common struggle against the imperialist plans.

The WPC is supporting and endorsing in this context the Meeting of Peace Movements of the Balkans and broader areas, to be held in Thessalonica in Greece on March 1-2, 2008.
