Why Did Britain and US Bomb Dresden in 1945?

By VICTOR GROSSMAN, BERLIN

A very large-scale anti-fascist demonstration took place in Dresden, Germany, February 13th of this year. February 13th has for years been a day of solemn ceremonies in this city on the Elbe River, this capital of Saxony. This marks the date in 1945 when British and American planes destroyed Dresden, a treasure chest of baroque architecture that was created largely by Italian architects, engineers and workers that were imported from Italy by August the Strong in 1700s when he converted to become a Catholic, so as to gain the throne of neighboring Poland.

The number of air-raid victims is estimated way over 25,000 people killed by bombs and firestorms that raged all across the city. Although some historians argue about Dresden’s military importance to the Allies, since World War II was coming to an end and there was no need for this military devastating action by the Allies. But most historians agree that this devastation of Dresden by the Allies was a veiled threat to the Soviet Union as was the absolute crime of dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, since Japan was already suing for peace. This was already the beginning of the Cold War against the Soviet Union.

A fact that is of outmost importance is that Saxony is a traditionally important East German industrial area whose textile, machine building and electronics industry were decimated after the forced reunification of East Germany with West Germany due to Gorbachev’s policy of forced dismemberment of the USSR. This unification forced young skilled people to go the West in order to search for work. With unemployment and dissatisfaction with that forced unification, Nazis from western Germany started to organize their Nazi movement, blaming ”all foreigners” – and with the help of internal and foreign backers, started to attack foreigners, beating them and often murdering them. The local authorities out of fear or sympathy for the Nazis very often tolerate them or turn a blind eye to these attacks.

This well-organized Nazi movement is well funded and uses a two-prong attack of all “foreigners”.

Young gangs of youth do the bloody work, striking and beating up “Zechen” (ticks is their word for leftists) Turks, Arabs, Africans, Poles and Vietnamese – while slicker upper class clique in their business suits join hometown clubs and organizations, run local fairs with goodies for the kids (money is no problem at all) and win seats in the local elections/ They use the slogans and demands of the leftwing movements, criticizing the German government in order to gain support from the people who are having a hard time now economically – but – these Nazis always blame the foreigners for the economic ills of German capitalism.

Nearly every weekend these Nazis use the Internet to organize marches, protests in towns and cities all over Germany. There are counter- demonstrations organized by the left movement, but the German police always protect the Nazis and brutally attack the anti-Nazi demonstrators.

This example shows as to where NATO and the EU is heading to by allowing this Nazi movement to spread, while funding and protecting them.

After the anti-Nazi demonstration in Dresden ended, two busloads of anti-fascists stopped at a highway restaurant on their way home, when they were attacked by armed Nazis. Many anti-Nazi demonstrators wee severely beaten, others were taken to a hospital with broken arms and fractured skulls. The police did not intervene at all. This shows that the authorities are in agreement with these Nazi thugs and will not protect the people who are against the spread of nazism-fascism in Germany and in some other European countries.
