In early hours of Sunday, June 28th about 200 soldiers under the command of a general that was trained at the School of the Americas, a notorious facility long used to train Latin American hirelings in subversion and torture, seized the democratically elected President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, placed him under arrest and forcibly bundled him out of the country – still in his pajamas.
This criminal act followed days of rising tensions and hours before Hondurans were to vote on a non-binding national consultation as to whether they would agree to hold a national referendum at the end of the year to create a new Assembly and a new Constitution.
The Honduran people are courageously resisting this fascist coup by means of strikes, demonstrations and other means open to them – including some resistance by sections of the Honduran military.
Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the Western hemisphere with over 70 per cent of the population living in poverty. President Zelaya raised the minimum wage by 60 per cent and having Honduras join the Bolivarian Alternative of the Americas, the regional, socialist-orientated trading and economic alliance. President Chavez of Venezuela promised Honduras cheap oil for at least 100 years. What will President Obama do – recognize the coup government in place now or will he call for the reinstatement of President Zelaya?
A question begs to be asked as to where is China of the UN Security Council to condemn this Honduras coup? After all, China is supposed to be a Socialist country?
