We are in touch with the workers' committee of the coal-mining joint stock company "Chernigovskoye" in the Kuzbass region of Russia. Below is the appeal issued to the world by the miners:
Dear Comrades!
We are miners of one of the biggest and most profitable open-pit mines in the Kuzbass region. The enterprise is now a joint stock company where the majority of the shareholders are the workers. Two companies, representing the interests of big financial capital are doing their best to deliberately bankrupt our enterprise and buy it up as cheap as possible. They have the complete support of the so-called "Red Governor" of the Kuzbass region, who is a high-ranking member of the CPRF - Aman Tuleyev.
Our bank accounts were seized and frozen as well as our assets. On August 31, 1999 special police regiments assaulted our central administration buildings, the work stopped and the open pit closed up.
We don't want to lose our jobs or the open pit mine. We believe that at this time the only way out is full workers' control over the enterprise. We shall fight to the end... but we need your support in our struggle.
A lot of important things can be done to help us:
1. Meetings, pickets, leaflets in our support.
2. Publicity in the mass media.
3. Letters, faxes and telegrams of protest to A. Tuleyev.
