Russian Duma Pre-Election News

With elections to the Russian Duma coming in December, the newspapers that NSC receives are full of articles that present the situation that unfortunately is not very conducive to a fair or even legal procedure that the present regime is now putting into a full pre-election avalanche of attacks and promises. Below are just some items that readers will be interested in...and even perplexed about!

How Many Election Blocs Are There?

By the above listing there are altogether five "left" and also five "right" election blocs.

There were proposals by the Russian Communist Workers Party (Tiulkin) and Workers Russia (Anpilov) to unite into "Communists of Russia" which was also supported by the "Union of Communist Parties-CPSU," which is headed by Oleg Shenin.

Not having achieved an united front - a real united Left Election Bloc mostly due to the arrogance and the agenda of the leadership of CPRF (Zyuganov), the results are such that it will serve the present bourgeoisie plans of divide and rule.

With the law in force that stipulates that any election bloc must top the 5% barrier, it is evident that these 4 parties of the left, outside of the CPRF (cushion which is one on which Yeltsin depends to sit in power) are not going to get their members into the Duma, and, and even if some individuals get there, there's not much chance of them making any difference.

The strategy of the present regime (which is backed by the West) is to let even the CPRF gain a majority in the DUMA, then in the months ahead, before the Presidential election in July of year 2000, let all the blame fall on these "communists" for the policies that are going to be pushed through by Yeltsin and company... thus pointing the finger at the "communists" for all the ills and thus presenting Yeltsin, Putin, Lebed a golden opportunity to easily swing into power, stronger than ever!

The shenanigans of billions of dollars that these five right-wing parties are spending on TV and all media propaganda, cannot in the wildest dreams be matched or even come close to by the left blocs. It costs $40,000 US in order to have your message on TV for one minute. The right parties have money and do appear each week. Where are all of these finances coming from? Of course from the newly rich, from Western "friends" and from not paying for months the back wages to the workers, but using them for all of their pre-election promotion!

The Russian Communist Workers Party has fielded 270 candidates in Russia, while the CPRF has all districts covered with their own candidates. The Stalin Bloc candidates as of this date are not known.

It's going to be a bitter lesson for the Russian working class - not having had the absolute necessity to have one SOLID LEFT BLOC to fight the might of the IMF, World Bank and NATO. But this lesson will solidify the real patriots - communists after, who do know that the Soviet Union and Socialism cannot be resurrected by parliamentary means.
