Besides its war against Iraq, the U.S. has been undermining Iraq through its policy of "sanctions." These have already led to the deaths of 1.5 million people in Iraq, most of them children.
The whole talk of Iraq's development of "weapons of mass destruction" is a camouflage. It is the U.S. that has the greatest arsenal of such weapons, and continues to use them in its wars. Remember the atomic bombs used to destroy Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II (meant to prevent the socialist Soviet Union from taking part in peace negotiations concerning Japan and to threaten it in the future), the widespread use of napalm and Agent Orange against the people of Vietnam, and the use of depleted uranium in the Gulf War (which have affected the U.S. soldiers as well).
The U.S. government's threats and attacks against Iraq are being carried out in the interests of the big oil companies and other monopolies who wish to control Iraq and the entire Middle East. It is these same corporations who have brought the peoples of the former Soviet Union to the edge of starvation. All working and progressive people in the U.S. must oppose these attacks.
In the tradition of the "Hands-Off-Russia" Committees (whose 80th anniversary we are celebrating), we say:
